The cork oak is at the heart of BIRKENSTOCK NATURAL SKIN CARE. As with the original BIRKENSTOCK footbed, it supplies the essential element. While our company has been working with cork as a raw material with great success for more than 240 years, it was only recently that cosmetics industry scientists discovered the remarkable anti-aging effect of the extract taken from the bark of the cork oak.
As regards this characteristic, great importance is attached to the substance suberin with its special net surface structure: it is responsible for the cork’s special elasticity and is proven to have a smoothing effect in our products – when applied regularly, the skin becomes visibly smoother. The multi-active cork oak complex which was especially developed for the brand is a 100% natural, active organic lipid complex which is obtained from the extraction from the cork oak as well as coconut oil. It stimulates cell renewal, strengthens the skin’s protective barrier and increases the skin’s moisture level.
ENVIRONMENTALLY VALUABLE
Studies suggest that the cork oak has been around for some 60 million years. Natural and cultivated populations of the evergreen tree only exist to the west of the Mediterranean, primarily in Portugal. Cork is a renewable resource. When a cork oak is around 25 years old, it is ready to be peeled for the first time. For use in cosmetics products, though, they are not peeled until they reach about 43 years, as older cork is especially rich in nutrients. From this point onward, the trees can be peeled at intervals of nine years for about a century and a half. Cork oak forests make a valuable contribution to the protection of biodiversity and constitute a safe habitat for many animal species. Cork oak populations also act as an essential lung for the planet, as they are able to absorb a great deal of carbon dioxide, thereby helping to combat global warming. For BIRKENSTOCK NATURAL SKIN CARE, it is important that the cork oak plantations are managed in an environmentally responsible manner. Their long-term protection and consistent preservation are a top priority.
