NEW BIRKENSTOCK STORE IN MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

28.05.2026

BIRKENSTOCK at the Malt Store opens its doors on Swanston Street, taking its place in one of Melbourne's most storied precincts – next door to RMIT University's Design Hub, just around the corner from Lygon Street's vibrant café culture and within walking distance of the Royal Exhibition Building.

The Malt Store – built in 1904 as part of the Carlton & United Breweries complex, home of Carlton Draught – carries the area's industrial heritage into a new era as the home of BIRKENSTOCK's Melbourne flagship, designed in collaboration with Melbourne Design Studios.

A dedicated repair workshop anchors the store, placing maintenance, care and longevity at the core of the experience. Here, every visit is an invitation to extend the life of each well-loved pair, underscoring the brand’s commitment to enduring quality.

Following more than a decade in Clifton Hill, BIRKENSTOCK’s next chapter at the Malt Store brings retail, repair and its Australian office together under one roof.

A SPACE GROUNDED IN CRAFTSMANSHIP AND DISCOVERY

Step in from Swanston Street and the city bustle recedes, giving way to an industrial interior that offers a tactile journey through BIRKENSTOCK's heritage and innovation. Circular chandeliers made from recycled aluminium by Massimo Corsini of MSX Projects cast warm light across exposed brick and black steel columns. Melbourne Design Studios preserved the building's original fabric, weaving BIRKENSTOCK's material palette and visual language throughout.

At the entrance, a cobbled bluestone threshold recalls Melbourne's historic laneways, marking the point of arrival with a custom manhole cover cast with the BIRKENSTOCK seal. Recycled timber in varied grain and tone warms the walls and display shelves, echoing the colour and texture of cork, the foundation of the BIRKENSTOCK footbed.

At the epicentre of the space, a sculptural interpretation of the original BIRKENSTOCK footbed highlights its six anatomical points alongside the words WALKING AS NATURE INTENDED – the brand's philosophy since 1774. Nearby, open timber frames display the raw components of its footwear: cork granules, jute, EVA, leather and buckles, while vintage campaign imagery traces the evolution of the brand. Through black steel-framed windows, the workshop is always in view. Every element reflects BIRKENSTOCK's commitment to function, quality and tradition.

At one end of the store, a matte black fireplace flanked by lounge chairs creates a welcoming retreat, encouraging guests to linger and discover the brand at their own pace. Close by, the Care Essentials foot and body care collection continues this slower rhythm, centred around a ceramic basin set into the timber counter – creating a quieter, more sensory moment.

REPAIR AS PRACTICE

What began in a small garage in Mount Waverley now spans over 81 square metres, making it the largest BIRKENSTOCK repair workshop in the world. Designed to support repair at scale, it reflects rising demand for restoration, with the programme growing by more than 45 per cent between 2019 and 2025.

A worn-in pair of ARIZONA sandals can be stripped back, restored and given a second life. Customers bring their worn pairs directly to skilled technicians, who carry out maintenance and restoration services – from heel replacements and buckle fixes to sole retreads and footbed replacements – combining specialised tools and machinery with decades of expertise developed for the brand. Salvaged leather and other usable materials are reused where possible, with more than 5,000 repairs completed each year.

A CURATED SELECTION OF ICONIC AND EVOLVING STYLES

BIRKENSTOCK at the Malt Store welcomes both long-time enthusiasts and first-time visitors to explore a curated selection of iconic silhouettes, including the ARIZONA, BOSTON and MADRID, alongside seasonal collections and exclusive releases from the BIRKENSTOCK 1774 line and the Care Essentials range. With this latest opening, BIRKENSTOCK deepens its Australian footprint, bringing its heritage of craftsmanship and innovation to Melbourne's inner north.

About BIRKENSTOCK

BIRKENSTOCK is a global brand which embraces all consumers regardless of geography, gender, age and income and which is committed to a clear purpose - maintaining foot health. Deeply rooted in studies of the biomechanics of the human foot and footed on a family tradition of shoemaking that can be traced back to 1774, BIRKENSTOCK is a timeless «super brand» with a brand universe that transcends product categories and ranges from entry-level to luxury price points while addressing the growing need for a conscious and active lifestyle. Function, quality and tradition are the core values of the lifestyle brand which features products in the footwear, sleep systems and natural cosmetics segments. BIRKENSTOCK is the inventor of the footbed and has shaped the principle of walking as intended by nature (“Naturgewolltes Gehen”).
