International passengers at Frankfurt Airport can now add yet another highlight to their stay in Germany. On October 27, BIRKENSTOCK – one of the most popular global shoe brands – opened an official store at the landside Shopping Boulevard mall – the official retail area of the airport. With a sales floor measuring 60 square meters, the company offers an extensive selection of more than 200 models, including many of its popular sandals, closed-toe shoes, sneakers, kids’ shoes, and EVA models, not to mention socks and selected items from the new bag collection.
The BIRKENSTOCK store is open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and showcases its stylish collections in Terminal 1, which is home to concourses A, B, C, and Z. This is where all flights for Lufthansa, its subsidiaries – Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines – and Star Alliance partners are handled. A few other airlines also take off and land at Terminal 1, including Qatar Airways and South American carrier LATAM Airlines.
As the fourth-largest airport in Europe and the largest in Germany, Frankfurt Airport serves mainly as an international hub for tourists and business travelers from around the world. From Frankfurt, passengers can travel to 275 destinations in 111 countries and choose between some 110 airlines. In recent years, the airport has recorded average passenger volumes of more than 60 million people a year, making it one of the world’s leading aviation hubs. Thanks to a planned expansion of capacity, the air traffic volume – and consequently the passenger volume – is set to once again increase considerably in the years ahead.
But Frankfurt Airport is also a popular attraction for locals, too: with more than 230 stores, numerous other businesses, and an on-site conference center, it provides jobs for more than 80,000 people, making it one of the largest local workplaces anywhere in Germany and a key economic force in the Rhine–Main Metropolitan Region. In addition, more than a million visitors a year – including shoppers and families with children, as well as technology and aviation enthusiasts – make use of the experiences on offer.
