BIRKENSTOCK proudly unveils the new addition to its clog family. An evolution of the TOKIO, first introduced in 1987 as a closed-toe shoe for professionals, the TOKIO SUEDE is a versatile clog with an adjustable heel- and arch strap, soft suede upper featuring BIRKENSTOCK’s distinctive design language built around the unmatched footbed experience. The TOKIO, a hidden gem with the Original BIRKENSTOCK Footbed at heart is ready to become a new staple, seamlessly blending timeless craftsmanship and design with BIRKENSTOCK’s commitment to quality, function & heritage.

The launch underscores BIRKENSTOCK's commitment to the clog category, a closed-toe silhouette that has been a hallmark of the brand since its inception in the mid-1970s. The fascination dates back to when Karl Birkenstock first designed the "Kork-Clog", which was soon renamed the BOSTON. Based on the BOSTON, the mother of all clogs, the TOKIO adds a heel strap for additional security, making it ideal for those who are on their feet all day.

Karl Birkenstock's design of the TOKIO was originally conceived for professionals (e.g. in the healthcare or hospitality sectors) who needed secure footwear for long hours on their feet. The iconic signature closed-toe sandal was first introduced in the late 80’s at a time when Japan was emerging as the next economic powerhouse and a fascination with its culture was prevalent in pop culture and design. The eponymous city of Tokyo and its global, lasting influence on creative inspiration clearly resonated with Karl Birkenstock's spirit of innovation and his distinctive design.

Setting the fashion stage for the TOKIO SUEDE, bespoke designers such as Dior did explore their unique interpretations of the clog silhouette with BIRKENSTOCK.

With the introduction of the TOKIO SUEDE, BIRKENSTOCK brings the functionality of its professional line to a wider audience. The TOKIO SUEDE's classic yet adaptable design and contoured cork-latex footbed, soft suede upper and nubuck leather back strap make it the perfect companion for streetwear, function and style enthusiasts alike.

BIRKENSTOCK’s campaign highlights the journey of the TOKIO SUEDE from its professional roots to its current status as a streetwear icon. This evolution is embodied by campaign protagonists Ollie Olanipekun and Orion Johnson. London-based Ollie, creative director and driving force behind Flock Together, a birdwatching community and Tokyo-based Orion, a multidisciplinary artist, represent the fusion of urban culture and nature, bridging communities through their unique projects.
